Strong Blonde Beer of the Tripel (Triple) Type

The Beer

Lupulus Blond is an unfiltered, unpasteurised "Ardennes Triple" that ferments in the bottle and in the barrel.

Pierre Gobron, the brewer at Brasserie Lupulus, sets a high benchmark for himself. Lupulus Blond comes in a champagne-style bottle, standing out with a striking label graphic of a wolf, designed by illustrator Jean-Claude Servais.

The name reflects both the Latin name of the common hop, humulus lupulus, and of the wolf (it translates directly as ‘small wolf’).

Wolves are no longer found in the Ardennes, but well-hopped beers are becoming more wide-spread.

Lupulus Blond was the first beer in the brewery’s range, followed by Lupulus Brune (dark), Hibernatus (a winter beer), Organicus (an organic beer), and the pale ale, Hopera.

Lupulus Blond is a refreshing and aromatic beer seasoned with a dash of thyme, epitomising the character of the Ardennes.

As does its home, a hi-tech brewery housed in a splendid 18th-century farm, located in a green oasis close to the stream that provides clear water for brewing.

This strong blonde triple is in great demand in Belgium. ‘Tripel/Triple’ indicates that higher quantities of ingredients have been used.

These tend to be strong beers that aim for a great balance between malt and hops.

Modern triples tend to be is fruity and dry with plenty of carbon dioxide and a lovely bitterness.

The complexity of Lupulus Blond is enhanced by the re-fermentation in the bottle.

8.5% ABV

Top-fermented beer that re-ferments in the bottle and in the barrel.

Lupulus Blond is brewed with water, Lupulus yeast, pils malt, Hallertau Magnum and Styrian Golding hops, and thyme.

Colour & Transparency

Lupulus Blond has a beautiful golden-blonde colour and shows a slight pearlisation underneath a sturdy, snowy-white head.

    Serving Temperature

    8°C-12 °C / 46°F-54°F

    Serving Glass

The beer is served in an elegant chalice on a long stem made instantly recognisable by the stylish drawing of a wolf cub surrounded by hop flowers.

      Character, Tastes & Aromas

Lupulus Blond has aromas of roast malt, hop, flowers, herbs and citrus.

The taste is one of hop bitters, seasoned with a hint of thyme and nuts, complemented by a slightly bitter finish.

Lupulus Blond makes an excellent pairing with game paté, Ardennes ham, escavèche (pickled fish) and trout fried in real butter.

This is also a great beer to pair up with Belgian cheeses, the beer is perfect for cutting through the fattiness of the cheese and cleansing your pallet for the next bite.

        Keeping and Storage

Lupulus Blond keeps in the bottle for two years and can be stored in the barrel for six months.

Store the bottles in a vertical position in a cool and dark environment. A yeast sediment will form at the bottom of the bottle.

There is no benefit to keeping any longer than specified. As with all beers of the triple style, this beer wasn't developed to age but to drink while fresh and crisp.
