Belgian Blond North Sea Beer

The Beer

Café Manuscript has been a landmark in Ostend, and far beyond, for over 20 years. This brown café with its fantastic atmosphere – known for its live performances, music and superb welcome – is also a mecca for the beer lover.

And since 2013, it has been the first official Beer Tourism Café. The extensive range of speciality beers on offer covers all of the main Belgian beer styles. What’s more, Café Manuscript has its own North Sea beer, produced exclusively for this popular café.

PoppoLou combines the names of the two children of owners, Glenn Rotsaert and Vanessa Demeij and is golden blond, just like their two boys. The fresh touch of the sea was essential in the making of this beer: it simply had to have a long, mild finish with plenty of taste. The PoppoLou also has a salty tang and is a great thirst quencher.

The surfer on the label refers to Poppo’s passion for surfing. The dummy hints at his brother Lou’s tender age when the beer was brewed for the first time. The typeface used – somewhat coincidentally – is Thirsty. This is also true of the many regulars – the café's customers, apparently, can’t get enough of it.

The many artists performing live here certainly don’t turn their noses up at a snifter of PoppoLou, either. There must be something in the sea air.

6% ABV

High fermentation beer, unfiltered, unpasteurised, re-ferments in the bottle.

Ingredients: spring water, barley malt (100% pils malt), hops (Cascade), (saison) yeast, sugar and brewing salts for the ‘touch of the sea’.

Colour & Transparency

Yellow-blond beer with finely pearlised froth that, like sea-foam on the beach, does not linger.

    Serving Temperature

    6 °C / 42 °F

    Serving Glass

PoppoLou is served in the elegant Beer Tourism tasting glass that was inspired by a high-stemmed wine glass. On the reverse of the glass you will find the markers (12.5cl, 25cl en 33cl) that make it very easy to pour out the right quantity for beer tastings. The Beer Tourism tasting glass can be purchased from Café Manuscript and is also stocked by Horeca Totaal in Ostend.

      Character, Tastes & Aromas

Immediate impressions of the sea thanks to the brewing salts. In the mouth, though, you'll also notice the tenderness of the beer. There's a great use of malts here, with a dry, brief, salty aftertaste.

The tender creaminess tends to linger, a bit like salted butter.

Let the sea have its way. This thirst quencher is a great match for a 'sole meunière'. For a pairing that brings out the hops, try a robust piece of meat – belly pork for example – with a classic garnish.

A real tip? Use a bottle of PoppoLou as cooking liquid for your mussels and enjoy them with an nice and cold PoppoLou!

        Keeping and Storage

The beer can be kept for 24 months in the bottle. It can be stored up to two years after bottling without any effect on taste or colour. Best stored in a dark and cool room.

        Bottle ✔       On Tap

PoppoLou is available on tap and in 33cl and 75cl bottles from Café Manuscript in Ostend. The 33cl and 75cl bottles can be purchased from Horeca Totaal in Ostend and Bruges.

As it is a relatively new beer you won't just find it anywhere yet, but more and more Belgian bars and cafés are starting to stock up on PoppoLou.
